Women's Soccer Makes Strides Toward Their First Game

August 28, 2002

The Citadel women's soccer team begins their second season. Although the first scrimmage against North Florida on August 25 ended with a 5-0 loss for the Bulldogs, head coach Megan Hjerling expects to double her wins from last year.

"We have a large number of new, talented athletes who all add depth to each position," stated Hjerling. "Having more people playing will decrease fatigue and increase our level of play."

Standing out for the Bulldogs are sophomores Kelly Pesterfield and Shawna Hartman, who both were nominated for pre-season conference honors. Pesterfield was ranked ninth in the nation for goals last year and proved to be a tremendous threat to opponents. Hartman, a defender, has an intimidating defensive game.

Along with the sophomores, several newcomers will add depth to the Bulldog roster. Freshmen Julie Austin, Sydney LaQuey, Megan McAuliffe and Lauren Merchant are all impact players on the field and will play vital roles as freshmen.

"LaQuey had an amazing run in the backfield on Sunday," continued Hjerling. "She played solid defense and did not let anything past her."

Two freshmen fight for the goalkeeping position. Angela Ellenwood and Martha Skinner both have made strides toward a starting position.

"We feel very comfortable with both Ellenwood and Skinner in front of the goal," Hjerling proceeded. "It will be a constant battle between the two for the starting position."

The Bulldogs begin the regular season with a match on September 1 at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. They return to Charleston for their first home match on September 4 against the College of Charleston.
