CofC Defeats The Citadel, 6-1

September 10, 2002

The College of Charleston defeats The Citadel in a heartbreaker, 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon, September 10. The point spread did not do the Bulldogs justice, according to CofC head coach, Kevin Dempsey.

"The Citadel came out strong and played with heart," said Dempsey. "Hats off to the coaching staff, who brought in a lot of great players."

The first half started slowly for both sides, although both teams had scored by the 13-minute mark.

"Our team began the game slow," continued Dempsey. "The new Citadel team showed us that we have to be ready to play on any given day: We were really lucky the final score wasn't 2-1."

The Cougars had only nine shots, while the Bulldogs had five. Goal one for the Cougars was shot by Carolyn Morris, unassisted, while Bulldog freshman Miriam Crawford scored her first-ever collegiate goal. Crawford's goal was assisted by junior Katrina Evans and freshman Sydney LaQuey.

"It is very exciting to have scored our first conference goal," stated Citadel head coach Megan Hjerling. "We are already ahead of where we were last year."

In the second half, the Cougars put it to the Bulldogs. CofC had 12 shots against the Citadel's three, which proved to increase goals for the Cougars. With goals by Samantha Test, Morris (her second), Claire Wigfall, Megan Broderick and Crystal Petroccoro, the Cougars quickly jumped ahead early in the period.

"The team has improved minute by minute," continued Hjerling. "We fell short to CofC today, but the rivalry will only continue to grow. We have to take each year one-day at a time, while taking each improvement with us to the next game."

The Bulldogs continue play at WLI on Thursday, September 12 against Georgia Southern.
