The Elon University volleyball team defeated the Bulldogs of The Citadel in a three-game match on Saturday night, 30-17, 30-26, 30-17.
Following five tie scores and three lead changes in the first game, the Phoenix used a 8-4 run to turn a 7-7 tie into a 15-11 lead. The Phoenix never looked back, finishing the game 30-17. In the second game, the Bulldogs gave Elon a battle. The Phoenix never led by more than four points with five tie scores throughout the game. Both teams tallied 17 kills and only five errors in the game. Elon ended the game at 30-26 on an ace from Emily Hayes.
Elon took a commanding lead at the beginning of the third game and relied on consistent and strong serving to finish the game with a 13 point lead, 30-17.
Elon, who improves to 11-13 (4-5), two more wins than last years squad, was led offensively by Hayes with 19 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Juliena Gigon added 10 kills with only one error and a .500 hitting percentage. Mary Kate Spear led the defensive effort with nine digs while Kate Hart added eight. Hart finished the contest with 36 assists. The Phoenix tallied 11 aces in the match.
The Bulldogs (3-15, 0-9) were led offensively by Stefanie Farris with nine kills and Lindsey Hodge who added eight. Farris and Katie Livingston each tallied seven digs for The Citadel's defense.
The Citadel returns to action on Tuesday, October 21 at 7:00 pm in a home match with Georgia Southern.
