The Citadel's tennis team participated in the Davidson annual fall tennis tournament October 17-19 taking on Southern Conference Appalachian State, Davidson and Elon, as the Bulldogs' top players led the way in singles competition.
Davidson dominated The Citadel in doubles competition, but the Bulldogs put on an impressive performance in top singles action. The Citadel's top three players seniors Matt Stubbs, John Williams and sophomore Warren Woolfolk received the only wins for Bulldogs with singles scores of 6-4, 7-5; 6-4, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-4, respectively. Sophomore David Lara followed with a defeat after three sets that resulted 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In singles action against Appalachian State, Williams and Woolfolk defeated the Mountaineers' Andrew Waters and Ben Shooter 6-3, 6-2 and 7-6, 6-1, respectively. In doubles action against Appalachian State, The Citadel won two of four matches. Senior-sophomore duo Stubbs and Lara defeated their opponents 8-6 and freshmen Carl Hocker and Derek Jose defeated their opponents 9-8.
"Everybody played well and competed hard," head coach Toby Simpson said. "I'm proud of the way they played and I'm really looking forward to the spring season."
The Citadel-Elon matches ended evenly as they each won half the singles and doubles action. Elon's Ter Malasitt dominated the Bulldogs top players Stubbs and Williams with scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 7-0. The Citadel leaders included Woolfolk, Jose and Hocker, who pulled out a win after extending his singles competition to three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. In doubles action, the Bulldogs duo Haynie and Hocker and Jose and Davidson's Jarred McKiernan defeated both sets of opponents 8-4.
The Citadel tennis team will be heading to Chapel Hill, NC to wrap up their fall season in the Omni Hotels ITA Regional Championships October 23-26.
