Statesboro, GA -
One of the key plays in The Citadel's 28-24 win over Georgia Southern was a fake field goal attempt that helped lead to the Bulldogs' third touchdown.
The Citadel had been struggling with its kicking game, and indeed later on had a field goal attempt blocked by Georgia Southern. So when the Bulldogs' third drive stalled at the Georgia Southern 23, Citadel coach Ellis Johnson called for a fake field goal.
Holder Ross Armstrong took the snap, read his keys and dashed nine yards on a fourth- and-8 play to Georgia Southern's 14. Nehemiah Broughton carried on five of the six plays it took to finish the drive off, giving The Citadel a 21-0 lead with 3:19 left in the first half.
"We put that in this week," Armstrong said of the play. "We saw on film they had weaknesses and ran it all week. I wanted to run it so bad. I couldn't wait."
Armstrong, a junior tight end, said it was his first carry since high school when he played a little at the fullback position.
"We knew it was going to work. We saw on film and knew exactly what was going to happen."
JOHNSON EXTENDS
Citadel senior wide receiver Scooter Johnson caught three passes for 33 yards, including a 13-yard catch for the Bulldogs' first score. Johnson has now caught at least one pass in 21 straight games and the TD catch was the 15th in his career, tying him for first place in The Citadel record book. Johnson is tied for third with Doug Johnson on The Citadel's all-time receiving list.
"This was big. This was the third time I've come down here, and we've come close twice," Johnson said. "All day we were stopping ourselves."
GSU RUSHING GAME
Georgia Southern had two backs go over 100 yards. Jermaine Austin carried 24 times for 160 yards, while quarterback Chaz Williams, who played for the first time in a month, carried 11 times for 107 yards. Williams was last year's Southern Conference player of the year.
