Charleston, SC -
The Citadel tailback Ern Mills was named the Southern Conference's co-offensive player of the week Monday.
Mills, a 5-11, 185-pound junior from Greer, rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries in last week's 27-23 win over VMI in Charlotte. It was the second 100-yard game of the season for Mills, who started in place of injured starter Nehemiah Broughton, who is out for the year with a knee injury.
Mills shared the award with East Tennessee State tailback Gaven Varner, who ran for 119 yards and two TDs on 16 carries in a 68-7 win over Chattanooga. Varner is a 6-1, 230-pound senior from Stratford High School.
The defensive player was Appalachian State defensive end K.T. Stovall, who had nine tackles, a sack, an interception and a 52-yard fumble return for a TD in a 26-18 win over Western Carolina. ETSU quarterback Carl Meadows, who was 7 of 19 for 97 yards and two TDs and ran for another score against Chattanooga, was the freshman of the week.
