Bulldogs point guard Hammack to undergo knee surgery

Nov. 4, 2003

Charleston, SC - Citadel point guard Kevin Hammack, one of two returning starters on the Bulldogs' basketball team, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday and will be out of action anywhere from 12 days to three weeks.

The surgery, by team physician Dr. Kenneth Caldwell, will repair a torn lateral meniscus in Hammack's left knee.

If the sophomore is out three weeks, Hammack will miss the Bulldogs' season opener against Webber International on Nov. 22.

Hammack, who averaged 7.5 points and 4.8 assists while starting 25 games as a freshman, first injured the knee during individual workouts before preseason practice began. The 6-1, 170-pound Baltimore native reinjured it last week.

"It's definitely something I'm glad happened now instead of later, so we can go ahead and get it fixed," coach Pat Dennis said. "But we hate losing him. There are two positions where we don't have a lot of depth, and that's at point guard with Kevin and at (power forward) with Max Mombollet."
