Georgetown capitalized on some hot shooting by senior guard Gerald Riley who scored 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the Hoyas past The Citadel, 85-62, in collegiate basketball action Monday night in McAlister Field House.
"We shot the ball well in the first half and it really got us going and set the tone for the entire game," Georgetown head coach Craig Esherick stated. "Overall, I am very pleased with our effort tonight."
Georgetown (9-0) only trailed once in the contest as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an alley-oop by freshman forward J'mel Everhart. The Hoyas then rode Riley's back in the first half as he poured in 15 points in the period. Georgetown maintained a double-digit lead from the 14:59 mark in the first half until the end of the game.
The Citadel (3-7) outscored the Hoyas in the second, 38-37, thanks to a 12-point performance from senior forward Max Mombollet. Mombollet's effort in the second included a breakaway dunk off of a sophomore guard Kevin Hammack pass that electrified the crowd.
"Georgetown has tremendous speed and athleticism," Citadel head coach Pat Dennis pointed out. "They got on us early and really kept us on our heels. They are a great team that will likely have a strong showing in the Big East."
The Hoyas had three players in double figures as forward Darrel Owens contributed 14, guard Ashanti Cook added 12 to go along with Riley's 23-point night. Georgetown took advantage of Bulldog turnovers as they scored 23 points off of 14 turnovers.
