Bulldogs Record Best Meet This Year With Numerous School Records

Feb. 24, 2003

Junior sprinter Alex Prince captured the Southern Conference title in the men's 400-meters with a time of 48.78 to lead the Bulldogs to a sixth place finish in the Southern Conference Indoor Championships held this past weekend in Johnson City, TN.

"The men did an outstanding job scoring 51 points as it was the most ever points scored at an indoor championships by a Citadel team," Citadel head coach Jody Huddleston stated. "The work horse of the meet was Kenyon Doyle, slightly injured, he ran five races in two days. He ran the trials and finals in the 55 meters, 200 meters and the third leg of the winning 4 x 400 relay."

Doyle teamed with fellow seniors J.T. Marbury, Jeff Witherspoon and Prince to capture the league title in the 4x400 relay with a school record time of 3:16.32. Senior Charles Watson helped the Bulldogs cause as he qualified for the finals in both the 55 and the 400-meter events.

"The surprise of the meet was Charles Watson who qualified in the finals of the 55 meters and the 400 meters," Huddleston added. "We did not expect him to qualify in the 400 and although he did it turned out to be a bad decision on my part. The finals of the 400 and 55 were back-to-back, he only had about 15 minutes rest before the 55, and it just killed him."

Other Bulldogs with strong performances include Quentin Armstrong who earned all-league accolades with a third place finish in the shot put, Robert Killian who finished seventh in the 5,000 and Marcus Carter who finished eighth in the triple jump. Junior Travis Taylor finished sixth in the high jump, while fellow junior Chris Franklin earned an eighth place finish in the 35lb weight.

The Bulldogs take a brief break before traveling this Saturday to take part in the Last Chance Invitational in Clemson, SC.
