Miami, FL-Ryan Braun's fifth inning two-run homer to left centerfield pushed the Hurricanes to victory over The Citadel, 6-1, in collegiate baseball action in Mark Light Field.
Miami (8-3) opened the scoring in the third inning on Danny Figueroa's safety squeeze that scored Frank Shannon, who led off the inning with a lazy fly that fell between defenders. Shannon was advanced to third on a foul pop flyby Greg Dini.
The Hurricanes added another in the fourth frame when Burt singled to left field and later scored on Richard Giannotti's line-drive double to right field. Citadel pitcher Jon Ellis got Shannon to ground out to Bulldog shortstop Matt Matulia to end the inning.
The Citadel (3-4) got on the board in the fifth to cut the Miami in half, 2-1, on three hits. Third baseman Chris Ard started the rally on an infield bunt single and moved to second on a sacrafice bunt by right fielder Brook Dantzler. Ard later scored on a RBI base nit to left by second baseman Jon Aughey. Designated hitter Andy Phillips bounced into an inning ending double play to end the rally.
Miami blew the game open in the bottom half of the fifth with three run to give the 'Canes a four-run lead, 5-1. Dini scored the run on a RBI single to center by Adam Ricks. Dini moved into scoring position on Paco Figueroa's sacrifice bunt. The big hit came on Braun's two-run blast. Ricks scored on the play.
Citadel relief pitcher Mark Egleton came on in relief of Ellis to end the fifth inning Hurricane rally by striking out Shannon.
Shannon drew a walk in the seventh inning plating Burt to push the Miami lead to, 6-1.
Hurricane starter Vince Bongiovanni (3-1) earned the win on 7.1 innings pitched, while striking out five Citadel batters. Ellis (1-1) got the loss for the Bulldogs. Ellis and Egleton both had five strikeouts on the night.
The Citadel and Miami will face-off in the third and final game of the series on Sunday, March 2, in Mark Light Stadium at 1:00 pm.
