The Citadel Blanks Lafayette, 7-0

March 18, 2003

Charleston, SC --Mark Egelton pitched six scoreless innings to lead The Citadel to its third consecutive shutout in a, 7-0, blanking of Lafayette in college baseball action Tuesday night in Riley Park.

The Citadel (10-8) scored four runs in sixth after catcher Jason Randall reached on an error by the third baseman. Tripp Cappelmann, who pinch ran for the injured Randall, moved to second on an error and then to third on a wild pitch. He was driven-in by Trent Weathers' two RBI double that one-hopped the right field wall. Chris Ard, who reached on a walk, also scored on the play. Brook Dantzler followed with a two-run double of his own that plated Ard and pinch hitter Ken Egelton to put the Bulldogs out in front, 4-0, after six innings.

The Bulldogs capitalized again in the eighth with three runs on four hits to make the lead, 7-0. Andy Phillips reach base on a bunt for hit and later scored on Dantzler's third RBI of the night that came on a single through the right side. Trent Weathers then came around to score after reaching on a fielder's choice as Josh Stackley singled. The third run of the inning and the seventh of the game came on a Leopard balk that scored Dantzler from third.

Lafayette (2-1) never could mount an offensive charge amassing only five scattered hits. Citadel pitchers only allowed one Leopard base runner to reach third and he was stranded as Bulldog reliever Matt Hamer got Lafayette to bounce into an inning ending double play.

Ard continued his consecutive games with a hit streak to 14 games with two base hits in three at-bats, while Weathers added two hits, two runs batted in, two runs, and a stolen base for the Bulldogs. Dantzler also contributed two hits and led the team with three runs batted in.

Mark Egelton (1-1) scattered two hits and struck out eight to earn his first victory, as Hamer and closer Shannon Sprouse came on to pitch three scoreless innings in relief.

The Citadel will take on Charleston Southern Wednesday, March 19, at 3:00 pm at Riley Park. The game was originally scheduled to be played on CSU's campus, but was moved to Riley Park due to a chance for inclement weather.
