The Citadel Drops West Virginia University, 4-3

Mar. 18, 2003

Charleston, SC - The Citadel tennis team played host to a competitive team from West Virginia University on March 18, defeating them 4-3, at the Donald C. Bunch Courts at the Earle Tennis Center. "We played hard, leaving with a victory over a solid program," commented head coach Toby Simpson, on the day's matches.

The Bulldogs (7-10) began slow in doubles play against the Mountaineers (6-6), grasping a win with the play of David Lara and Warren Woolfolk against J.R. Randell and Kyle Markham, 8-6. Singles match play proved more futile for Matt Stubbs, whom led the Bulldog's in the number one seed by defeating Eric Kochanski, 6-3, 6-4. In the number four seed, Lawrence Tere out-played Randell, 6-4, 6-2, while Lara, in the number five seed, defeated the Mountaineer's Julian Mesa, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Rounding out singles play, Woolfolk defeated Markham, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, in the sixth seed.

The Bulldogs will step back on the court Saturday to take on the Buccaneers from East Tennessee Sate at 2 pm at the Earle Tennis Center. Admission is free to the matches and fans are encouraged to come and root on the Bulldogs while they enjoy complementary hotdogs.
