Furman University defeated The Citadel, 5-2, in Southern Conference tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Donald C. Bunch Courts.
The Bulldogs (7-12, 0-6) played hard throughout the double point matches against the visiting Paladins (7-10, 2-1), however, could not claim a victory. In doubles play, Furman's James Cameron / Patrick Fillnow defeated Matt Stubbs / John Williams, 8-4. The number two seed, Ben Pauluhn / Andrew Rogers out matched The Citadel's David Lara / Warren Woolfolk, 8-2. In the final match of doubles play, the Paladin's Chris Henderson / Allen Simmons out hit Nick Medica / Lawrence Tere, 9-7.
In singles play, the number one seed, Stubbs of The Citadel was defeated by Cameron, 6-4, 6-2. In the number two spot, Williams was out played by his opponent from Furman, Henderson, 6-3, 6-3. The Paladins dropped the third seed by the play of Fillnow against Medica, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. The Citadel's Tere, played tough in the fourth seed, eventually defeating Rodgers, 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. In the fifth seed, Lara from The Citadel defeated Ryan McCarthy, 6-2, 7-5. The days matches were complete in the sixth set by the play of Simmons whom fell to The Citadel's Woolfolk 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
The Bulldogs next match will be Tuesday, March 25, at 12:30 pm when they travel to Central Florida to take on the Golden Knights. The Bulldogs will then return home from spring break to take on the Terrier's from Wofford next month April 2, at 2 pm at the Donald C. Bunch courts.
Furman will head home to take on Charlotte on Wednesday, March 25, at 2:30 pm.
