Ken Egelton Pitches Eight Innings to Shutdown CofC, 19-3

Charleston, SC - Ken Egelton pitched eight innings giving up one unearned run to lead The Citadel over College of Charleston, 19-3, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Riley Park.

The Citadel's (16-10, 9-2 SoCon) Chris Ard singled in Trent Weathers and Andy Phillips to score the first runs of the ballgame. With a single through the left side, Ard extended his hit streak to 21 consecutive games. Ard and Chip Cannon scored on Will Coker's double to left field and Matt Matulia's single brought in Brook Dantzler to finish the inning with the Bulldogs in the lead 5-0.

Weathers' single to right field during the second inning brought John Aughey home to make the score 6-0. Josh Stackley was plated from second on Matulia's right field single, while Aughey's single brought home Matulia. In the fifth, Matulia advanced to third on Aughey's double and Phillips' ground out scored Matulia. Cannon's three run homer to right field, which brought home Weathers and Aughey, added for runs for the Bulldogs pushing the lead to 12-0.

After several Cougar defensive changes in the sixth, Matulia walked and then advanced to second on Aughey's infield single. After Matulia stole third, he was driven-in by Phillips' right field single. Cannon flied out to finish the inning, but not before The Citadel scored two more runs. The Citadel got two more runs in the seventh on a Coker RBI that plated Ard. The other Bulldog run scored when Dantzler was plated on Aughey's fielder's choice to push the lead to 16-0.

The College of Charleston (17-10, 5-3 SoCon) scored one unearned run in the top of the eighth. Brett Gardner and Victor Martinez both singled and then advanced on a balk. Gardner then scored on a strike out by Roman Duty.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Stackley connected for his second home run of the season that came on a three-run blast to left. Dantzler and Cannon scored on the Stackley homer.

Citadel pitcher John Pollock, who came in to pitch the ninth, gave up two CofC unearned runs when Mark Lyons scored on Jay McCown's double. Adam Tolman scored the third Cougar run on Coker's ground out.

Ken Egelton (3-1) pitched eight innings, giving up one unearned run and scattering seven hits to earn his third victory of the season. CofC's James Fender (2-1) was chased after getting only two outs in the first inning, giving up five runs to take the loss.

The Citadel will attempt to sweep the CofC Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Riley Park.
