Charleston, SC -
Sophomore wide receiver Jermaine Anderson hauled in five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while fellow sophomore tailback Nehemiah Broughton rushed 13 times for 69 yards and a touchdown to highlight The Citadel's second scrimmage of the spring in Johnson Hagood Stadium.
"This scrimmage shows that we are a lot further ahead than we have ever been in the past," Citadel head coach Ellis Johnson stated. "We have some kids making plays for us, now we just need to find out who wants the ball in their hands at crunch time."
Along with Anderson, junior wide receiver Scooter Johnson caught four passes for 77 yards and redshirt freshman wide out Gary Domanski made three catches for 67 yards and a score. The Bulldogs' defense however, played well today according to Coach Johnson.
"Overall our defense did a decent job today," Johnson added. "Our secondary has to become better players. Marcus Cohen and Dru' Knight have a lot of experience and when Shawn Grant returns to full action I feel we will be pretty strong back there."
The quarterback situation is working its way out as redshirt freshman James Reiter and junior Justin Hardin are taking the majority of snaps with the No. 1 and No. 2 offenses. Reiter completed five-of-nine passes for 76 yards including a 40-yard bomb to Johnson. Hardin also played well as he completed six-of-11 passes for 60 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
"Our quarterback play is still a little too erratic for us to put the No. 1 label on any guy," Johnson continued. "The two guys that are doing the best job running the offense and not making mistakes are James and Justin."
Defensively, the second scrimmage was a hard-hitting affair as sophomore defensive end Michael Ballentine posted a sack and several tackles for loss. Junior linebacker Julian West intercepted a Hardin pass and returned it 39 yards, while freshman cornerback Andrew Henderson blocked two field goal opportunities.
The Bulldogs' third and final scrimmage will be next Saturday, March 15 at 9:30 am.
