Davidson Takes Game Two From The Citadel, 3-1

Davidson, NC - Derrick Wolpert pitched eight innings scattering three hits and Sam Navarro drove-in three runs on three hits to help lead Davidson over The Citadel 3-1 in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park.

Davidson (12-17, 7-12 SoCon) scored two runs in the third to take an early 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs. With two outs and runners on second and third, Sam Navarro single through the left side of the infield driving in Andrew Musashe and Justin Hartanov.

Navarro drove-in the Wildcats third run of the game in the fifth on a double to right-center that plated Musashe. Musashe, who reached on a base on balls, pushed the Davidson lead to 3-0.

The Citadel (20-14, 10-4 SoCon) threatened in the fifth as Brook Dantzler doubled and advance to third on an error by the Davidson centerfielder. Dantzler was stranded at third though as Wolpert struck out Josh Stackley to end the inning.

Matt Matulia scored on Chris Ard's sac-fly in the ninth, but Davidson closer Brian Akin got Chip Cannon to strike out and Trent Weathers to ground out with runners on first and second to end the game.

Wolpert (2-4) struck out eight and walked only two to earn his second victory of the season, while Ken Egelton took the loss giving up three runs in five innings of work. Akin pitched the ninth to earn his third save of the 2003 campaign.

The Bulldogs and the Wildcats will meet at Wildcat Park on Sunday, April 13, at 1:00 pm for the final game of the three-game series.
