Winthrop scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie as they went on to defeat The Citadel 6-5 Wednesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, SC.
With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, right fielder Daniel Carte singled in pinch runner Carlos de la Rionda to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. One play later, third baseman David Scoggin singled in Kyle Roberson and Matt Matkovich to extend the Eagles' lead to 6-3.
The Bulldogs came back to score two in the eighth off Winthrop relief pitcher Mike Honce to cut the Eagles' lead to one.
Jeremy Plexico came in to shut down the Bulldogs in the ninth to preserve a 6-5 win for the Eagles.
Danny Bean (3-1) gave up just one hit in two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win for the Eagles.
Plexico pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Evan Burgess (1-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up three runs on two hits in two and two-thirds innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Chip Cannon hit his sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning. The blast put the Bulldogs up 3-1.
Winthrop improved to 24-14 with the win, while The Citadel fell to 20-16 with the loss. The Eagles have defeated the Bulldogs three straight games, dating back to April 24, 2002.
The Citadel will host Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State Friday, April 18, at 5:00 pm in Riley Park.
