Five Citadel cadet-athletes, Suzanne Campbell, Chip Cannon, Marc Quesenberry, Hunter Reid and John Williams earned TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference honors; the league announced Monday, May 12.
"We are extremely proud if these five outstanding student-athletes," commented Athletic Director Les Robinson. "For them to be able to so successfully manage their time between academic, military and athletic responsibilities is quite impressive!"
Junior Suzanne Campbell captained the women's inaugural golf season this year. She shot 165 in two rounds at the Springlake Intercollegiate Women's Golf Tournament and helped the team to an eighth-place finish. A native of Mt. Pleasant, Campbell has been tabbed to the Dean's List, earned Gold Stars (3.7 GPA or higher), and had two semesters with 4.0 grade point averages, while working towards her business administration degree.
Junior baseball first baseman Chip Cannon is batting .324 with 10 homeruns and 53 RBI this season and leads the team in homeruns, RBI, and walks (41). Currently his 21 career homeruns rank seventh on The Citadel's all-time list. Cannon, a native of Killeen, TX is a criminal justice major with a 3.23 GPA.
Sophomore distance runner Marc Quesenberry regularly finds himself among the top three finishers in the 3000m steeplechase and is ranked 5th on the school's all-time list. Quesenberry broke the 10-minute mark at the Furman Invitational and dropped another 28 seconds (9:27.32) for a personal-best the following weekend. A regular on the Southern Conference Honor Roll and Athletic Director's honor roll, Quesenberry is a two-time dean's list biology major with a 3.5 grade point average. He received one Gold Star and is under a Marine Corps contract.
Junior trackster Hunter Reid is the Bulldogs main decathlete. Reid earned seventh-place at the Southern Conference Championships and improved by 500 points this year. Currently, Reid ranks third in Citadel decathlon history. He received the Presidential Aid and Life Scholarships and was tabbed to the Commandant's and Presidential lists in 2002. A two-time Academic All-Southern conference honoree and four-time Athletic Honor Roll member, Reid maintains a 3.41 grade point average and is a three time dean's list criminal justice major.
Junior John Williams, the Bulldogs No. 2 singles player, recorded a 19-9 overall record in 2003. With a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 victory over Davidson's Donald Miles, Williams helped the team reach the second round in the Southern Conference Tournament. Williams has received Gold Stars, Dean's List, and Athletic Director's Honor Roll for his academic work while maintaining a 3.78 grade point average in accounting.
