Citadel's Dr. Caldwell Named Finalist for 2003 Verizon Hall of Fame

May 28, 2003

Charleston, SC - Dr. Kenneth M. Caldwell, a four-time football letterman and a member of The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame, has been named a finalist for the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame. This marks the second consecutive year that he has been included as a finalist.

A native of Anderson, Caldwell was an academic all-American punter and linebacker for Bobby Ross- and Art Baker-coached teams from 1975-78. He recorded 412 tackles during his career and was a two-time selection for all-Southern Conference. He was inducted into The Citadel's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.

A permanent fixture on the football field's sidelines, Caldwell has served as The Citadel's orthopedic surgeon for the past 13 years.

"His intelligence and athletic accomplishments have been duly noted, but he's always been approachable and has always maintained an even-keel," said Andy Clawson, The Citadel's Director of Sports Medicine. "He had those traits as a student-athlete and still does today as our team orthopedic surgeon. There's no question that his playing experience makes him an even better professional because he's been through it."

Dr. Caldwell is one of 25 people and the only one from the Southern Conference selected for entry in the 16th Annual Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Four finalists will be inducted at ceremonies in Cleveland on June 28.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing fields.

Dr. Caldwell, who resides in Awendaw with his wife Marianne and four children, is associated with Orthopedic Specialists of Charleston.
