Charleston, SC -
Citadel baseball coach Fred Jordan announced Tuesday morning that David Griffin, a former shortstop for the Bulldogs from 1999-2002, will be part of the 2003-04 coaching staff.
"We are very excited to have David back in the program," Jordan announced. "He has a passion for the game that will spill over into the clubhouse."
Griffin's responsibilities will include working with the catchers and help with day-to-day operations and administrative tasks of the ball club.
"David was a passionate player whose love for the game and great work ethic made him a great college baseball player," added Jordan. "His ability to showcase his work ethic has given him the ability to play professionally for the last two seasons."
Since graduating from The Citadel in 2002, Griffin has been playing professional baseball for the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League. He has split time between second base and shortstop for the Otters, while helping to lead them to the 2003 Frontier League Championship against the Gateway Grizzlies.
While at The Citadel Griffin was a three-year starter at shortstop for Jordan's Bulldogs. He was a part of three Southern Conference Regular Season Championship teams and two Southern Conference Tournament Championships that made it to the NCAA Regional Tournament twice.
As a senior, Griffin led the Bulldogs in doubles with 15 and the squad in batting average with a .340 season clip. His senior season was cut short as he was hit in the face with an errant pitch against Wofford causing him to miss the final 16 games of his career. Before the injury Griffin had started 139 consecutive games at shortstop for The Citadel.
Griffin replaces former Bulldog assistant coach Chris Gibson who left The Citadel this past summer to pursue personal interests outside of baseball.
