Freshman Kelly Sheehy's two goals were not enough to give the Bulldogs a victory over Troy State, in non-conference action, September 21, on Washington Light Infantry. Troy State freshman Janna Mosher tallied two goals for the Trojans, including the game-winner, in the 5-4 win over The Citadel.
"It was disheartening to not get the result," remarked head coach Megan Hjerling. "We have to forget about this, move forward and concentrate on the upcoming week."
Mosher scored her first goal of the game off a pass from Tara Pertrucci in the fourth minute of the game to make the score 1-0, Trojans.
Five minutes later freshman Kristine Solis answered back for The Citadel at the six, off a long pass from junior Kelly Pesterfield, to even the score at 1.
Troy State's freshman Lucia Castaldo scored off her own rebound at 16:13 to retake the led, 2-1.
Graduate Student Louise Kjellquist assisted sophomore Megan McAuliffe as she volleyed one past Troy State's Cathy Truszkowski, and made the score 2-2.
Troy State sophomore Emily Cobb added one more the scoreboard just before the end of the first half off a pass from Erin Doud to make the score 3-2 at the half.
The Bulldogs wasted little time at the beginning of the second half evening out the score at 3-3 as sophomore Julie Austin assisted on Sheehy's goal.
Doud of Troy State scored an unassisted goal six minutes later making the score 3-4.
After being fouled in the box, The Citadel's Sheehy converted on a penalty kick and tied the score at 4.
With eight minutes left in the game Mosher scored the game-winner and finalized the score at 5-4.
The Bulldogs will travel to UNC-Greensboro, September 23, before returning home, September 27, for a Southern Conference match-up against the Elon Phoenix.
