Why do we have to pay to listen to our games on the Internet when they used to be free?

Sept. 22, 2003

Charleston, SC - Q: Why do we have to pay to listen to our games on the Internet when they used to be free?

A: Our previous provider regrettably filed for bankruptcy and we went through the appropriate state process to secure a new service. After a thorough search, we entered into a formal partnership with Official College Sports Network (OCSN).

OCSN is the premier leader in the Internet media delivery service. This is the same group that handles South Carolina, Clemson, Notre Dame, UCLA and numerous other top-flight schools. They offer much better packages and services, and now to listen to our games, there is a nominal fee.

While they provide us with what we desire and need internally to promote our teams and programs, we feel that the $6.95 monthly fee to listen to the games is reasonable, especially compared to the price of a ticket to see the game in person.

And a percentage of that fee is returned to The Citadel and it goes to our operating budget.

Of course, The Citadel Radio Network is currently in several cities throughout the state of South Carolina. If you live in an area where our network doesn't reach and there is enough interest to become an affiliate where the games can be heard for free, the cost is approximately $12,000 a year for football ($1,000 per game).
