Bulldogs Defeat Winthrop, 3-2

Sept. 3, 2003

The Bulldogs scored three goals in the first half to clench the team's first victory of the season, 3-2. Sophomore Lauren Merchant scored the go-ahead-goal in the 29th minute.

"Starting the season off with a victory is a great sign, especially as we look to begin conference play this weekend," commented head coach Megan Hjerling. "Missing some starters today forced us to make adjustments. Kelly Pesterfield made a smooth transition to the backfield and had a phenomenal performance. It was a good sign that we are forming as a team."

The Bulldogs scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Shawna Hartman scored off an assist from newcomer Kelly Sheehy in the third minute of action. Six minutes later, Sheehy converted a penalty kick in to her first collegiate goal and placed The Citadel on-top 2-0. 47 seconds before the half, Merchant scored and sent the Bulldogs into half time with a 3-1 lead

Annie Johnson knocked one in for Winthrop in the 27th minute to put the Eagles on the board just before the half. Winthrop gave a noble effort in the second half with a late goal from Jennifer Hensley, but fell short as The Citadel held on for a 3-2 win.

The bulldogs return to action Saturday as they travel across town to take on local rival College of Charleston at 7PM.
