The Citadel Downs Campbell Wrestling 36-9

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- - The Citadel used two falls from Sean Markey and Dan Thompson and a technical fall from Travis Piccard to score a 36-9 win over Campbell Saturday night in Buies Creek in collegiate wresting action.

The match got underway at the 125-bout. The Citadel's Ryan McClester took an advantage after registering a one-point escape against Andy Bricker early in the second period. McClester added two more points with a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in period to win 3-1.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 9-0 after Sean Markey pinned CU's Jordan Henning 34 seconds into the 133-pound bout. Adam Bricker and The Citadel's Levi Duyn battled in the 141-pound bout, with Bricker leading 4-1 after the first-period on a pair of takedowns. Duyn cut the lead to 4-2 with an escape in the second-period. Bricker held off Duyn for the win and made the score 9-3.

In the 149-bound bout, The Citadel's Travis Piccard jumped out to a 4-0 lead against CU's Elliot Berger after one-period. Piccard added ten-points in the second period to lead 14-0 and added two-more points early in the third-period for the 16-0 technical fall, giving the Bulldogs a 14-3 to lead.

The Bulldogs' Dan Thompson built a 9-0 lead over CU's Jeff Lyons after the first three minutes. Thompson's lead grew to 11-0 before he pinned Lyons at the 4:26 mark. The Citadel's second pin of the night gave them a 20-3 lead.

The Citadel added four more points when Mike Martinez defeated Josh Kalafchi 20-8 in the 165-pound bout.

In the 174-bound bout, Keith Clifton of the Citadel used three takedowns, a near fall and an unsportsmanlike conduct on CU's Brian Hocum to lead 10-2 after the first period. A near fall in the closing seconds of the second period gave Clifton a 16-2 edge after five minutes. Clifton scored the technical fall early in the third period, giving the visitors a 29-3 lead.

CU's Lantz Nixon recorded his 11th win of the season by pinning the Bulldogs' Josh Dickerson just 0:58 into the first period. Nixon's pin made the score 29-9 in favor of The Citadel.

The Bulldogs' scored the victory in the 197-pound bout when Jordan Everett down Mark Averell, giving the The Citadel a 33-9 advantage.

The heavy weight bout went into overtime after CU' Dennis Campbell and The Bulldogs' Billy Liane found themselves dead locked 1-1 after regulation time. Liane escaped with 20.3 seconds left in the first overtime to take the 2-1 win.
