Charleston, SC -
Senior Jordan Everett and juniors Sean Markey and Nolan Roggenkamp pinned their respective opponents as The Citadel blanked Anderson 48-0 in collegiate wrestling action Tuesday night in McAlister Field House.
The Citadel (5-2, 1-0 SoCon) used three falls, two technical falls and two major decisions to give the Bulldogs their fifth dual win of the season. Anderson falls to a record of 4-5 on the year.
"I thought our guys wrestled hard," stated coach Rob Hjerling. "Anderson gave us a fight, but we did what we need to tonight to earn the win."
Junior Ryan McClester, who is ranked as high 16th in the nation at 125 pounds, started the match by giving the Bulldogs a quick 6-0 advantage as he took a forfeit from Anderson. Fellow junior Sean Markey, the 16th ranked wrestler at 133, doubled the Dogs lead to 12-0 as he pinned the Trojans' Jeremiah Wilson in 2 minutes and 56 seconds.
Hjerling's grapplers continued to mount a lead as junior Nolan Roggenkamp (141) pinned Mike Sanders of Anderson at the 4:57 mark pushing The Citadel lead to 18-0. Following Roggenkamp's fall, sophomore Travis Piccard added five points in the 149-pound match giving the Military College of South Carolina a 23-0 advantage with a 19-3 technical fall over Anderson's Josh Merry.
In the fifth match of the night the Bulldogs received their first major decision as sophomore Dan Thompson (157) of Howard City, Michigan defeated the Trojans' Herb Porter 19-3. Thompson's major decision put Hjerling's club ahead 27-0.
Following in Thompson's footsteps was junior Mike Martinez of Temple Terrace, Florida. Martinez, a 165-pounder, defeated Hunter Garner 9-2 giving the Bulldogs an insurmountable lead 30-0.
The next three Citadel grapplers scored big for the Bulldogs. At 174 pounds, junior Keith Clifton scored a 17-0 technical fall against Anderson's Nick Niesielowski. Clifton, who is ranked 18th in both the Wrestling Mall and Amateur Wrestling News polls, pushed the Dogs lead to 35-0.
The Citadel got four more points in the 184-pound match from sophomore John Dickerson, a native of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, as he tallied a 15-3 major decision against Matt Dollar. Senior Jordan Everett followed with a crushing blow as he pinned Anderson's Justin Smith in the first 45 seconds of the 197-pound match. Everett, who was ranked 19th in the country earlier in the season, gave the Bulldogs six points and a commanding 45-0 lead.
Junior heavyweight Billy Linane capped off the shutout with a decisive 8-1 win over the Trojans' Aaron Lambert. Linane's victory gave The Citadel a 48-0 victory over the Anderson Trojans.
"These last two matches against Campbell and Anderson have been a good test for us," added Hjerling. "Now we can concentrate on Duke and Appalachian State who come to town later this week."
The Bulldogs will host their next two matches as Duke comes to Charleston on Saturday, January 24, as they hit the mats against the Blue Devils at 2 pm in McAlister Field House. Hjerling's squad will then square off against Southern Conference foe Appalachian State on Tuesday, January 27, at 7 pm in the Bulldogs' home arena McAlister Field House.
