Hewston Paces Bulldogs With Record Mile Time

Laura Hewston rewrote The Citadel's indoor mile record as the Bulldogs opened the indoor season at the North Carolina Invitational, January 30-31, at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, NC.

The coaching staff wanted to experiment with the line-up and as a result Hewston, a freshman from Summerville, SC, set the women's indoor mile record at 5:49.30. She also found 13th-place in the 3000-meter at 11.42.89.

"The women's team performed well for their first meet of the season," commented head coach Jody Huddleston. "Laura (Hewston) ran well for us and proved her versatility as she ran a much shorter distance (the mile) than normal."

Classmate Monesha Booker clenched the 22nd spot in the 200-meter dash as she cross the finish in 27.16. This moved Booker into the number one spot for the 200-meter according to the most recent Southern Conference ranking. Freshman Stephanie McNeill took 11th-place with a mark of 11.28m in the shot put.

The women travel to Delaware to take part in the Blue Hen Invitational, February 7-8. Events are scheduled to begin at 6PM on Friday and 9 AM on Saturday.
