Furman defeats The Citadel, 6-0

Greenville, S.C. - Freshman Katie Tucker scored the first two goals of her career and nine Lady Paladins tallied assists as Furman downed The Citadel 6-0 in women's soccer action in front of a crowd of 323 Friday night at Stone Soccer Stadium. It was the first loss for the Bulldogs in four games.

"I won't be surprised to see The Citadel win one or two Southern Conference matches and compete for a spot in the tournament," said Furman head coach Brian Lee.

Tucker opened the scoring at the 27:45 mark taking a long ball from Alice Martin and beating Citadel goalkeeper Angie Ellenwood to give Furman a 1-0 lead. In the 41st minute, junior Kat Kelley recieved a centering pass from Catie Miller off of Emily Krankowski's cross from the right side and netted her second goal of the season to up the lead to 2-0 at the half. Less than ten minutes into the second half, junior Tara Marker rocketed a shot past substitute keeper Brit Bunnell to lift the Lady Paladins to a 3-0 advantage. Anna Betton and tucker were credited with assists on the goal at the 54:11 mark.

Just 2:27 later Tucker tallied her second goal of the night. After recieving a pass from Erin Sanders from the right side of the box, Tucker fired in a shot from 17 yards to give the Lady Paladins a 4-0 lead.

Furman uped its advantage to 5-0 at the 62:14 mark. April Raymer lofted a pass into the box for Marker. Her shot rebounded off of the keeper to Martin who tapped in the loose ball for her first goal of 2004.

Substitue Kaylan Pedine capped the scoring at the 72:30 mark with her third goal of the season. Kelly Shedd dribbled past the keeper on the right side of the box and sent a pass across the goal mouth to Pedine who finished from seven yards.

Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw picked up the win, despite being forced to make only one save. Bunnel tallied six saves after coming off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Junior Lauren Merchant got off the only shot on goal for The Citadel.

The Bulldogs, now 2-6-1 (0-2-1 SoCon), return home to host another conference match against Chattanooga on Sunday, October 3 at 1pm at WLI Field.
