Wofford Edges Out The Citadel, 3-2

Oct. 17, 2004

Box Score

Charleston, SC - Junior forward Lauren Merchant posted two goals on the day, but it was not enough to get by Wofford as The Citadel dropped a close match 3-2 to the Terriers at WLI Field Sunday afternoon.

The Citadel took the lead within three minutes of play as sophomore Kelly Sheehy crossed the ball to sophomore Kelly Hasselman inside the box who then dropped it to Merchant for the score.

The Terriers then tied it up at 12:07 as sophomore Jessica Connett pulled freshman goalkeeper Brit Bunnell out of the box and dribbled around her to make the score 1-1. One minute later, the Terriers found the net again as Connett and freshman Whitney Steelman worked to get the ball to senior Eve Van Harpen for her fourth goal on the year and to give Wofford a 2-1 lead going into the second half. At 54:59, a pass off the foot of freshman Ana Miranda found Merchant who tallied her eighth score of the season to tie it up 2-2. In the 74th minute, junior Mallory Bramlett kicked the ball up-field to Steelman who then fired it into the net from 15 yards out for the game winner.

Bunnell tallied 10 saves in the contest to keep the game within reach for The Citadel.

"At the end of the day, we just need to minimize our mistakes," commented head coach Megan Hjerling.

Next up, the Bulldogs travel to Elon, NC to take on Elon University this Thursday, October 21 at Snyder Field at 4:00 pm. The Terriers travel to play at Davidson this Wednesday at 7pm.
