Dahlonega, GA -
Junior Amara Atella was the top shooter for The Citadel with a score of 567 as The Citadel rifle team finished third behind rivals Birmingham Southern and N.C. State this past weekend in the first SEARC match of the 2004-2005 season.
"Frustration and disappointment are the best words to describe our opening match of the SEARC season," commented head coach Bill Smith. "A week of above average practice scores and new team records being set helped to fuel expectations of an opening match win."
Instead of an easy victory, the Bulldogs finished third overall behind match winner Birmingham Southern and N. C. State in both the SEARC match and the NCAA match. The Citadel fired a 2254 SEARC score and a 2218 (men's) and 2172 (women's) NCAA total. Match winner BSC fired a very solid 2294 and 2283 out of a possible 2400 score.
Other teams firing in the event included Clemson, Mercer, North Georgia, Georgia Military, and Augusta State.
Next up, the Bulldogs travel to Birmingham, AL this weekend, October 23-24, to compete in their second SEARC match of the season.
