Elon Defeats The Citadel, 6-1

ELON, N.C. - Junior Julie Austin scored the lone goal for The Citadel as Elon defeated the Bulldogs 6-1 in a Southern Conference tilt at Rudd Field on Thursday afternoon. The victory improved the Phoenix to 3-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in league play. The Bulldogs slipped to 2-12-1, 0-8-1.

Longo got the scoring started in the 12th minute when she converted Elon's first penalty kick attempt of the season for her third goal of the season. Erin Gaeng, playing only her third career game as a forward, put the Phoenix up 2-0 at 23:09 when she knocked in a corner kick for her first goal of the season and second of her career. Longo and Houseworth each were credited with assists on the play.

The Citadel cut the lead in half when Julie Austin netted her second score of the year when she settled a Maggie Bryan pass and lobbed the ball over Elon's Amy Cahill at 37:35. Elon scored the first of its four second half goals at 74:42 when Houseworth headed Longo's corner past the Bulldogs' Angie Ellenwood for her third goal of the year and second in two games. Longo and Houseworth each earned assists on Elon's fourth score, an Alisa Petitt goal off a corner at 76:17.

Lacey Whitmer scored her first career goal in the 79th minute off an assist from Kelly Williams to put Elon ahead 5-1. Petitt scored her second of the game, and third of the year, in the 88th minute off a cross from Gillian Murray to finish off the scoring for the day.

The six goals scored by Elon are the most since Elon shutout Greensboro College 8-0 on September 26, 1996. Elon also set new season highs in assists (7), shots (32) and shots on goal (17).

The Citadel tallied 11 total shots, including 10 on goal.

Cahill went 78:06 in net for Elon, allowing one score and making six saves. Kaitlin Lannon played the final 11:54 and corralled three saves for the Phoenix. Ellenwood went the distance in front of the goal for The Citadel, grabbing 11 saves.

Elon heads to Chattanooga for a 2:00 p.m. tilt with the Lady Mocs on Sunday while The Citadel will travel to Navy for a 1:00 p.m. matchup that same day.
