Citadel head coach John Zernhelt announced Tuesday afternoon that senior tailback Nehemiah Broughton was invited to play in the 56th Annual Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama on January 29, 2005.
"Nemo is a tremendous player and we are very happy for him," Zernhelt stated. "This is a great opportunity for him to showcase his talents with some of the best players in the country."
Broughton, a 6-0, 240-pound, North Charleston native is a two-time All-Southern Conference performer and currently ranks fifth in Citadel history with 2,556 yards rushing on 538 attempts. Broughton also ranks fifth in school history in scoring with 28 touchdowns and fifth in 100-yard performances with 11.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to play football at a level as high as the Senior Bowl," Broughton stated. "I have worked really hard during my career and it is a great chance for me to show everyone what I can do on a football field."
Broughton marks the ninth Bulldog to play in the Senior Bowl and the first since 1996 when offensive lineman Shawn Lyons represented The Citadel in the game. Broughton joins a list of Bulldogs that includes five Citadel Hall of Famers, four All-Americans and three former NFL players.
"Nehemiah is a very talented running backs that has great size, strength and speed. We are excited to have him attending the Senior Bowl." Vic Knight, Media Relations Director of The Senior Bowl stated. "The NFL has shown a lot of interest in him and that is one of the major reasons he has been invited to play in the Senior Bowl."
The Senior Bowl and The Citadel have a special tie in that Bulldog Hall of Famer, E. Bush Peebles, Class of 1939 and football letterwinner is one of the founding members and currently serves as the Chairman Emeritus of the annual senior all-star game. Peebles served as the chairman of the Senior Bowl from 1985-2001.
The Senior Bowl annually entertains over 700 NFL head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts and front office personnel. The Senior Bowl is presented by Food World and will be held in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The game is scheduled for 3:00 pm and will be aired nationally on ESPN.
