Charleston, SC -
Freshman forward Warren McLendon posted 13 points, while junior guard Dante Terry netted a dozen to lead The Citadel over Washington & Lee 73-62 Tuesday night in non-conference basketball action in McAlister Field House.
The Citadel, which has its first 2-0 start since 2001, had four players in double figure scoring; McLendon, Terry, sophomore J'mel Everhart with 11 and junior Matt Davis, who tallied ten. Davis who ripped down nine and McLendon who snatched seven led the Bulldogs on the boards.
"We found a way to win this one, but we still need to improve our intensity and mental play," stated coach Pat Dennis. "We got to play a lot of players tonight, so that will help us in the long run."
Washington & Lee (0-3) was led by sophomore guard Chris Halkitis who paced the Generals with 13 points. W&L also received a strong effort from junior David Will as he grabbed nine rebounds and scored 12 for the Generals.
The Bulldogs had a slight 34-32 half-time lead over head coach Pat Dennis' alma mater, but did not have the game in hand until Everhart and Terry hit a combined five of six free throws in the final 20 seconds of the game.
Before going up by 11 with just a few seconds remaining on the game clock, the biggest lead of the night for The Citadel was ten, which the Bulldogs had at the 3:52 mark in the second half after Terry knocked down his second three-pointer of the game.
The Generals seemed to have the Cadets on the ropes mid-way through the second period as they held a slight 49-48 lead with 8:25 to play. But after two free throws from McLendon at the 8:19 mark that gave The Citadel a slim 50-49 advantage, the Bulldogs never relinquished their lead.
Dennis' will pack his team onto the bus as they head north to face Georgetown on Friday, November 26 at 7:30 pm in the MCI Center. The Bulldogs will return home on Monday, November 29 at 7:15 for a match-up against Chowan, the first of four straight home contests.
