Charleston, SC -
Senior tailback Nehemiah Broughton rushed for a career-high 181 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns to lead The Citadel past Chattanooga, 44-24, in Southern Conference football action Saturday afternoon in Johnson Hagood Stadium.
"Nemo had a great day for us and the offensive line did a great job opening the holes for him to run through," Zernhelt stated. "It was a great game for everybody; this win means a lot for our program and gives us a ton of confidence going into the remainder of our schedule."
The Citadel (2-6, 1-4 SoCon) jumped out to a 21-7 lead before the Mocs mounted a comeback. The Bulldogs opened the scoring when Broughton posted his first rushing score of the game, a nine-yard score with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter.
Chattanooga (2-7, 2-4 SoCon) fired back as quarterback Cedric Stevens hooked up with wide receiver Tyrus Ward on a 46-yard scoring strike on their next possession.
The Citadel then capitalized on two rushing touchdowns from freshman quarterback Duran Lawson. Lawson's first score came on a six-yard jaunt with 1:14 remaining in the first. The second was a result of a nine-yard run at the 9:15 mark in the second quarter.
The Mocs responded late in the second quarter as Stevens hooked up with wide receiver Emanuel Hassell on a 37-yard pass to cap off a four-play, 83-yard drive with 2:56 remaining in the half.
The Bulldogs pushed the advantage to 24-14 going into the half as kicker Blake Vandiver booted a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the half.
Chattanooga shut down the Bulldogs' offensive attack on the first drive of the second half and put together a drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal from kicker Jonathan Godfrey with 9:57 remaining in the third quarter. The kick closed the margin to 24-17 in favor of The Citadel.
The Bulldogs then rode the legs of Lawson again as he scrambled five yards for the score and capped off a dominating 11-play, 67-yard drive that lasted 5:21. The Mocs responded on the next possession as Stevens hooked up with tight end Brian Arnold for a four-yard score with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Broughton then posted the game-breaking play as he sprinted untouched 92-yards to push The Citadel advantage to 37-24.
"It was a very key play at that point in the game," Zernhelt stated. "He came through with probably one of the biggest runs of the year to this point. When he got to the outside I thought their cornerback had an angle on him, but he was not going to be denied that touchdown."
Wide receiver Rontreal Tyler finished off the scoring as he took an end-around 10-yards for the touchdown to make the score 44-24 with 2:01 remaining in the contest.
The 181-yard performance from Broughton marked his 11th of his career and moved him into fifth-place all-time in school history with 2,531 yards rushing. The two touchdown scores also moved him into fifth place in school history with 168 points to pass former Bulldog great Justin Skinner.
The Citadel takes to the road next week as they travel to Elon, NC to take Elon at 2:00 pm on November 13. The Mocs return home to take on Liberty at 1:30 pm in Chattanooga.
Post Game Quotes
Chattanooga Head Coach Rodney Allison
On today's game
"We just didn't play very good. We were not effective on either side of the ball. I was worried before the game because I didn't feel like we had the same emotion going into this game as we did last week. I don't think we played a very good football game and that's the bottom line. The whole team didn't play well. We didn't look crisp or sharp or prepared.
"We hung in there in the second half, it was not too bad of a score but we let it get away from us. We didn't get it done for whatever reason. They played and we didn't and that cost us."
On upcoming games:
"The players and the coaches have to understand that these last two games are for real."
The Citadel Head Coach John Zernhelt
On the game:
"It was a great game for everybody. We make winning a big deal around here and today proved that with our locker room celebration. This game gives us a lot of confidence going into the last few weeks of the season."
On Nehemiah Broughton's long, 92-yard touchdown run:
"It was a very key play at the point in the game. He came through with probably one of the biggest runs of the year to this point. When he got to the outside I thought their cornerback had an angle on him, but he was not going to be denied that touchdown."
On Gary Domanski:
"The play we received from him was a big lift for us. He made plays in all areas of the game and gave our team a huge lift when we needed it."
