Wofford swept The Citadel, 3-0 Saturday morning in volleyball action in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers completed the Senior Day sweep with scores of 30-20, 30-28 and 30-25.
On the final point of game one, Duke entered the records for the first time in the match with her 17 total attack of the game. She finished with 44 in the match for a career tally of 3,400 to surpass the mark held by Janna Webb (1999-2002), who posted 3,371 in her career. Laser moved into fourth place on the all-time list in the same category after finishing today with 26 total attacks. She now has recorded 3,248 in her four years.
Then, near the end of game two, Duke again broke a Terrier career mark. She moved into sole possession of first place in all-time kills with 1,196 to pass the previous mark of 1,193 by Currie Gossett (1999-2002). Gossett's mark was later matched by Laser as the pair now share a second-place tie in the category.
Duke led all players with 15 kills, 44 total attacks, two service aces and 17 points. Laser contributed with 13 kills, 26 total attacks, a match-high .385 hitting percentage and 14 points.
Also displaying a strong offensive effort for the Terriers was sophomore Christal Carey (Anderson, S.C.). Carey notched 14 kills, 31 total attacks and a .355 hitting percentage with 15.5 points. She tied Duke for second on the team with 12 digs behind leader Meredith Brantley (Charlotte, N.C.).
Junior Rhea DeJesus (Geneva, Ohio) tallied a match-high 46 assists, and Wofford added four blocks, including a pair of solo efforts by junior Angela Berry (Modesto, Calif.).
The Bulldogs were paced by 11-kill showings by Audra Ritchie and Marina Daniel. Ritchie led the team with a .219 hitting percentage while Stefanie Farris dug 16 Terrier attacks.
"Duke and Laser showed a lot of heart out there today," said head coach Corey Helle. "I'm proud of them both, as well as our whole team for pulling through in this victory. It was only fitting for the both of them to play the way they did on Senior Day."
With the victory, Wofford improves to 9-19 overall and 5-8 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel drops to 12-18 overall and 3-12 in league action.
The Terriers will next play Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they host Furman in their final home match of the season. The Bulldogs will host Charleston Southern Tuesday also in their final home contest of the campaign in McAlister FieldHouse.
