Sean Markey Named Citadel Male Athlete of the Month

Feb. 2, 2004

Charleston, SC - The Citadel Athletic Department named Sean Markey, a junior member of Bulldog wrestling team, the January Male Athlete of the Month on Monday, February 2.

Markey, a native of Randolph, NJ, posted a 10-1 record in January, including the title of 133-pound All-Academy Champion.

"I am very happy that Sean has had such a successful month that he would even be considered for this award," stated coach Rob Hjerling. "He has worked hard to get where he is and that work ethic will hopefully prepare him for where he needs to be come the conference tournament and nationals in March."

In dual matches, Markey had wins over grapplers from Purdue, Kent State, Cleveland State, Campbell, Anderson, Duke and Appalachian State. At the All-Academy Championship, Markey, the nation's leader in pins with 20, earned wins over wrestlers from Norwich, Air Force and VMI to earn his second consecutive All-Academy crown, as he also won the same title as a sophomore in 2003.

Of his 10 victories, six were by pin fall and one was by major decision. With 10 wins, Markey, who is ranked 16th in the nation by Wrestling Mall, improves his overall season record to 28-4. His lone loss in January came against Matt Ciasulli of Lehigh, who is ranked among the top-20 133-pounders in the country. Markey's two pins at the All-Academy tournament give him 50 on his career.
