Charleston, SC - The Citadel (3-3, 1-0 SoCon) took two of three doubles matches and four of the six singles points to defeat Davidson (5-3, 0-1 SoCon) 5-2 in both teams' conference opener.

In the No. 1 doubles match-up senior Rob Haywood and junior Donald Miles beat The Citadel's sophomore duo of Warren Woolfolk and David Lara, 8-5. In the No. 2 grouping, senior Matt Stubbs and freshman Carl Hocker went to the wire to defeat Davidson seniors Jonathan Britt and Rob Gould, 9-7, while Bulldog senior Matt Williams and freshman Robert Haynie handled junior Bryan Stonestreet and freshman John Bolton 8-4 in the No. 3 match to give The Citadel the doubles point. In singles action, Citadel senior Matt Stubbs knocked off senior Rob Haywood in the No. 1 pairing, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, as senior John Williams earned another singles point for the Bulldogs in the No. 2 match by defeating junior Donald Miles, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. In the No. 3 slot, junior Bryan Stonestreet earned the first of Davidsons two singles points by defeating freshman Carl Hocker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The Wildcats' other point also came in straight sets as freshman Porus Jetli beat freshman Robert Haynie, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 6 match. In No. 4 singles, Citadel sophomore Warren Woolfolk came back to beat senior Jonathan Britt, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. The Bulldogs fifth point came in the No. 5 match as sophomore David Lara defeated junior Russell Burns, 6-4, 7-6.

"It's great to start out the conference schedule with a victory," commented Head Coach Toby Simpson. "Davidson is a good, solid team. I'm proud of our guys and hope that they can continue against Chattanooga tomorrow."

The Citadel hits the courts again tomorrow, February 29, at noon when they play host to Chattanooga. The Mocs are lost to Charleston earlier today, 6-1.
