The Citadel (4-3, 2-0 SoCon) swept all three doubles matches and sophomore Warren Woolfolk defeated Chattanooga freshman Mark Fynn, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles pairing to seal a 4-3 victory over Chattanooga (2-4, 0-2 SoCon).
In No. 1 singles, Citadel senior Matt Stubbs handled senior John Hangstefer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Senior John Williams also won in straight sets over Chattanooga senior Alex Mabred, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 match-up, junior Thomas Knizat beat Bulldog freshman Carl Hocker, 6-4, 6-2, while the Mocs' junior Tim Kutschera downed sophomore David Lara, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in the No. 5 match. Chattanooga's third and final point came in the No. 6 pairing as sophomore Mario Axente beat freshman Robert Haynie in a ten-point tie-breaker, 5-7, 7-5, (10-1).
In the No. 1 doubles The Citadel's sophomore duo of Warren Woolfolk and David Lara beat junior Thomas Knizat and freshman Mark Fynn, 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles senior Matt Stubbs and freshman Carl Hocker defeated Moc senior John Hangstefer and sophomore Josh Bales, 8-2, while Bulldog senior John Williams and freshman Robert Haynie downed junior Tim Kutschera and freshman Arturo Navarro by the same score to complete the sweep.
"The whole team fought extremely hard today," said Assistant Coach Adam Carey. "The seniors really stepped up for us."
The Citadel tennis team will head on the road Thursday, March 4 to take on Wofford at 1:30 pm in Spartanburg, while Chattanooga will host Elon at 2 pm on Thursday.
