Charleston, SC - First-year Citadel head football Coach John Zernhelt announced Wednesday afternoon that 19 high school players have accepted grant-in-aid packages and signed their national letter-of-intent to play football for the Bulldogs.

"In lieu of the dead period between head coaches, the assistant coaches showed a high-level of professionalism in keeping the recruiting process going," Zernhelt stated. "This is a good class for us and a direct reflection of the fact that any success a head coach has is a result of your assistant coaches."

The recruiting class consists of 11 players from South Carolina, two from Alabama, Florida, Virginia and one from Georgia and Oklahoma. The class is comprised of 14 all-state performers, 13 all-region selections, 14 all-area or district players, three conference or regional players-of-the-year, one state player-of-the-year, six team captains, nine postseason all-star bowl participants and two finalists for Mr. Football in South Carolina.

"We feel we met the needs of our team with this class especially at quarterback," Zernhelt continued. "We brought in some guys at that position that bring a wealth of athleticism and solid prep backgrounds."

The 19 signees mark the third largest class at The Citadel in the last five years. The class is balanced and consists of four defensive linemen, three wide receivers, three cornerbacks, three quarterbacks, two linebackers, a tight end, a fullback, an offensive lineman and an athlete.
