Spartanburg, SC -
Freshman J'mel Everhart earned a spot on the Southern Conference's All-Freshman team as selected by the coaches Monday, March 1. The coaches named East Tennessee State's Zakee Wadood as the 2003-04 Player of the Year. ETSU's Murry Bartow was named the Coach of the Year and Furman's Quan Prowell was named the Freshman of the Year.
"This is a well deserved honor," remarked head coach Pat Dennis. "J'mel has been a warrior on both the defensive and offensive ends all year and his high basketball IQ helped J'mel receive this honor."
To date, the Tyler, Texas native ranks seventh in the SoCon with 7.3 rebounds per game and is tied for fourth in offensive boards with 2.81 per game. Everhart has started all 27 games for The Citadel and posted double-digit points on nine occasions and double-digit rebounds three times. Three times, the 6-6 forward tallied a season-high 13 rebounds. He recorded 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against Davidson on January 6th en route to notching his first career double-double.
Everhart marks the eighth Bulldog to receive this honor and the first in six years to be selected-the last, Alan Puckett and Rod Shiver, in 1999. Everhart is the sixth freshman to be tagged to the list under the direction of head coach Pat Dennis.
The Citadel is set to begin the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament in game 2, against number three-seeded Elon, on March 3, in North Charleston Coliseum. Game time is approximately 2:30 pm.
