Charleston, SC -
The Citadel (9-6, 5-0 SoCon) rounded out the first half of the conference with a 4-3 win over Georgia Southern (6-11, 1-5 SoCon). The Eagles won the doubles point, but the Bulldogs were too tough in singles and won all four of their points in straight sets, including the deciding point from match No. 2 in which Bulldog senior John Williams beat freshman Doruk Baglan, 6-4, 6-3.
The Citadel's only doubles win came in match No. 2, where senior Matt Stubbs and freshman Carl Hocker defeated sophomore Lasha Janashia and freshman Doruk Baglan, 8-4. In No 1 doubles, Georgia Southern junior Danie Van Den Heever and sophomore Vincent Patry beat sophomores David Lara and Warren Woolfolk, 9-7, and freshmen Tom Green and Germano Knorr downed Bulldog senior John Williams and freshman Robert Haynie, 8-4 in the No. 3 match to earn the doubles point for the Eagles.
In No. 1 singles, Citadel senior Matt Stubbs won his fifth straight Southern Conference singles match this season by downing sophomore Vincent Patry, 6-1, 6-2. On court four, Bulldog sophomore Warren Woolfolk beat sophomore Lasha Janashia, 6-4, 6-3, and Woolfolk's classmate David Lara added to The Citadel's tally by beating freshman Tom Green in the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-2. The Eagles got singles points in match No. 3 when junior Danie Van Den Heever beat Citadel freshman Carl Hocker, 6-4, 6-3, and in the No. 6 match where Bulldog freshman Robert Haynie fell to sophomore Charles-Henri Trottet, 6-3, 6-2.
"John (Williams) and Matt (Stubbs) showed a lot of senior leadership by rallying the guys back after dropping a tough doubles point," head coach Toby Simpson said. "The whole team is showing a lot of heart from number one to number six."
The Eagles next match comes on Wednesday March 17 when they will travel to Tampa to face South Florida at 2 pm. The Bulldogs will take a day off before hosting coach Toby Simpson's Alma Mater, Southern Mississippi (2-6), at 2 pm Tuesday at the Earle Tennis Center.
