Senior right-hander Chip Cannon pitched a complete game and struck out four to help The Citadel to a three-game sweep of Western Carolina as the Bulldogs defeated the Catamounts 6-3 in Southern Conference baseball action.
The Citadel (11-8, 5-1 SoCon) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as freshman first baseman Zach Brown connected on his first collegiate home run to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
Western Carolina (9-12, 0-6 SoCon) responded with two runs in the top of the fourth as junior first baseman Jared Greenwood blasted a two-run homer that scored third baseman Denver Edick. The Catamounts added another run in the top of the sixth as Greenwood led the inning off with a single and later scored on a single from left fielder Chad McKown.
The Bulldogs regrouped in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead for good as they scored five runs in the frame. Junior third baseman Chris Ard started the rally as he doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by junior second baseman Jon Aughey. Brown then drilled a single up the middle that scored junior right fielder Josh Stackley who reached on a single earlier in the inning. Sophomore shortstop Matt Matulia followed with an RBI single that scored Aughey. The big blow came off the bat of junior catcher Will Coker who blasted a double into the left field corner to score Brown and Coker.
Cannon closed the game out as he improved to 1-1 on the season. Cannon's complete game effort included 134 pitches, four strikeouts and marked the second of his career. For the Catamounts, starter Brad Josey took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Citadel returns to action on Tuesday, March 23, as it will travel to North Charleston to take on Charleston Southern at 3:00 pm. Western Carolina continues its road-swing, as it will take on Tennessee Tech on Wednesday March 24 at 3:00 pm (CT).
