Junior centerfielder Jordan Haar went two-for-four with four RBI, two runs scored and a grand slam to lead Charleston Southern past The Citadel, 12-4, in collegiate baseball action Wednesday night in Riley Park.
The Citadel (16-9) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as sophomore centerfielder Trent Weathers was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by senior first baseman Chip Cannon.
Charleston Southern (13-15) responded in a grand way in the top of the third inning as Haar crushed a grand slam over the left field fence. The blast, his seventh of the season scored junior right fielder Jay Reynolds, junior shortstop Billy Dalton and freshman third baseman Lionel Greene. The Buccaneers added another run in the frame as junior left fielder Brian Sole scored on a squeeze bunt off of the bat of freshman first baseman Graham Maiden.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the third as junior third baseman Chris Ard walked to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single from senior left fielder Andy Phillips. The Citadel loaded the bases with two outs in the frame before CSU forced shortstop Tripp Cappleman to pop out to end the inning.
The Bucs added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning as Sole tripled home Haar and later scored on a single from Reynolds. The Charleston Southern bats cam alive again in the top of the seventh as Greene and catcher Scott Thacker added RBI singles.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the seventh as Cannon blasted his ninth home run of the season. Redshirt freshman Chris Eaves connected on his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the eighth to draw the score to 9-4.
CSU added three runs in the top of the ninth for insurance.
Freshman right-hander Nino Fasulo picked up the victory and improved to 3-0 on the season. For the Bulldogs, freshman lefty Jamie Maxwell took the loss and fell to 1-1 on the season.
Of note, Haar's home run in the third inning marked the 30th of his career and broke CSU's all-time mark of 29 held by Buc great Bud Parrish (1976-79), while the homer by Cannon marked the 32nd of his career and ranks him tied for second on the school's all-time charts with Anthony Jenkins (1987-1990).
The Citadel returns to action on Friday, April 2nd as they take on Appalachian State at 6 pm in Riley Park, while Charleston Southern travels to UNC Asheville for a three-game series starting at 6 pm on the same date.
