Honolulu, HI -
Chip Cannon blasted a two-run homer and Josh Stackley tallied two doubles and three runs batted in to lead The Citadel over Hawaii 11-3 in the consolation game of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Saturday afternoon in Les Murakami Stadium.
Chicago State (0-8) scored one run in the first giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. After a double to start the rally, Joe Perez scored from third on a RBI-groundout by Brian Grippo. Citadel starter Ken Egleton got Alexis Galloza to groundout to third to end the inning with out surrendering any more runs.
The Citadel (5-6) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Josh Stackley plated Matt Covington, who reached a base on balls, on a double down the left field line. Stackley, who moved to third on the throw home attempting to get Covington, scored a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chip Cannon.
The Cougars tied the score at two runs apiece in the second as Egleton committed a throwing error that allowed Andy Pasko to come around to score from second base. Pasko, who singled, scored as Egleton overthrew first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jonathan Sakurai. Sakurai was stranded at third at the end of the inning to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
The Bulldogs got two runs in the fifth to retake the lead 4-2 with four innings to play. With the bases loaded and no outs, CSU starter Houston Mad struck out Aughey, but balked in a run with Covington at the plate. Following the balk that plated Matulia, Covington flied out to left, while recording a sac-fly that allowed Will Coker to tag and score.
In the eighth, CSU struck to within one run by cutting the lead to 4-3 with back-to-back doubles by Dave Walter and Joe Perez. Perez's double down the left field line plated Walter for the Cougars third run of the game. With Perez on second and one out, Bulldog Zach Brown relieved Egelton and retired the side with out allowing a run.
Chip Cannon put The Citadel on top 6-3 with a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and Covington at second, Cannon blasted a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence. The eighth inning dinger for Cannon was his third of the season and second of the tournament. He now has 26 career round-trippers, which is good enough for fourth place on the Bulldogs' all-time home run chart.
After Cannon's blast, The Citadel blew the game open with five more runs in the eighth giving the Bulldogs an 11-3 lead with one inning to play. The Dogs used four more hits, a passed ball, a hit-by-pitch and a Chicago State error to score six more runs. The big hit was a two-out bases loaded two-run double by Stackley that plated Aughey and Andy Phillips.
Egleton (2-1) earned his second win of the season as he gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits in seven and a third innings of work. Egleton tallied nine strike outs including three in the seventh as he struck out the side in order. CSU starter Houston Mad (0-1) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on seven hits.
Stackley finished the tournament with a team-high nine runs batted, while Cannon had two home runs, seven runs batted in and a game-winning three-run triple in the Bulldogs' 7-6 win over No. 20 Oregon State on Tuesday.
After returning from Hawaii, The Citadel will host Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, March 10 at 3 pm in Riley Park. Following the Bulldog-Chanticleer contest, the Dogs will travel to take on new SoCon foe Elon in a three-game weekend series that begins on Friday, March 12 at 2:30.
