Bulldogs Drop One To UNC Wilmington

Charleston, SC - The Citadel earned the doubles point, but came up short in singles action as UNC Wilmington (5-4) defeated the Bulldogs, 4-3 in tennis action this afternoon at Donald C. Bunch Tennis Courts on the campus of The Citadel.

"It was tough not to receive the result," remarked head coach Toby Simpson. "We look forward to turning things around against Richmond later in the week."

In No. 1 singles, Citadel senior Matt Stubbs overcame junior Danilo Mendes, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Freshman Carl Hocker won the first set against UNCW sophomore Rahul Rajhewa at No. 2, but dropped the final two, as the match ended, 6-2, 4-6, 4-2. Senior John Williams, in No. 3 singles, fell to Seahawk freshman Caio Piacentini, 6-3, 6-2, while the No. 4 match-up added another win for UNCW, as sophomore Tim Meredith downed sophomore Warren Woolfolk, 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore David Lara earned the third and final point for The Citadel (4-4, 2-0 SoCon) as he defeated senior Scott Curry, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot. UNCW clenched the winning point as freshman Grant Holland beat freshman Robert Haynie, 6-2, 2-6, 2-6. In the No. 1 doubles The Citadel's sophomore duo of Woolfolk and Lara beat Mendes and Rajkhewa, 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles Stubbs and Hocker defeated Piacentini and Meredith, 8-3, while UNCW's Curry and Holland overcame Lara and Haynie in the No. 3 spot.

The tennis team will return to the Donald C. Bunch Tennis Courts Tuesday, March 9, as they take on Richmond at 2 pm.
