Mt. Pleasant, SC -
The 20th-ranked College of Charleston scored five runs in both the second and seventh to pound The Citadel 15-4 in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Field. The win for the Cougars moves CofC into first-place and one game ahead of the Bulldogs in the SoCon standings.
The College of Charleston (25-6, 10-1 SoCon) took an early 2-0 lead after one inning as the designated hitter Matt Hallet doubled to right-centerfield driving in the Cougars' two runs. After two walks, Hallet ripped the first pitch he saw into the gap plating Phillip Coker and Brett Anderson.
The Cougars blew the game open in the second, 7-0, with five runs on five hits and a two-run throwing error by Bulldog right fielder Josh Stackley. CofC got RBI-singles from Coker, Brett Gardner and Hallett, while two runs came home on the errant throw by Stackley.
The Citadel (20-11, 12-2 SoCon) cut the lead to three with four runs in the top of the third to make the score 7-4. Stackley made up for his two-run error by driving home sophomore center fielder Trent Weathers and junior third baseman Chris Ard on a double to left-center. With one out and two runs in, junior second baseman Jon Aughey connected for his fourth home run of the season on a two-run job to left. Stackley scored on Aughey's dinger.
With a runner on second, Anderson doubled-in Gardner on his ninth double of the year giving CofC an 8-4 lead. The Cougars added a run in the sixth on a sac-fly to extend their lead to 9-4.
The College of Charleston put up five runs in the seventh to slam the door on the Bulldogs with a ten-run lead 14-4. CofC plated a run in the eighth on the Cougars' second sacrifice fly of the game to make the final score 15-4.
Cougar starter Ryan Johnson got the win extending his record to 6-0 on the year. Johnson pitched five and a third, allowing four runs on 11 hits. He fanned three, while walking only one. Nick Chigges pitched the final three and two-thirds to earn his first save of the year. He did not give up a run, while surrendering only one run. The one blemish on Chigges' line was the four base on balls dealt to the Bulldogs.
Ken Egleton (5-2) took the loss for The Citadel as he did not make it out of second inning, giving up seven runs on five hits and three walks. The loss for Egleton was his first in six starts, which snapped his five-game win streak.
The Cougars faced four Bulldog hurlers, scoring 15 runs on 16 hits and seven walks. The Citadel left 11 runners on base and had the bases loaded twice and failed to score both times.
The Citadel and College of Charleston will meet tomorrow at 1 pm in Patriots' Point for series finale.
