Charleston Southern scored three runs in the eighth on five walks and an error to defeat The Citadel 5-2 Wednesday afternoon in nonconference baseball action at Buccaneer Field. With the victory, the Bucs take the series with three wins in the four game series.
Charleston Southern (17-20) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Buccaneers scored the games first run on three consecutive base hits, one of which was a RBI-single by Jordan Haar. The Bucs added their second run on a balk from Citadel starting pitcher Griff Beckham that allowed Brad Woods to trot home from third.
The Citadel (20-13) plated a run in the fifth to cut the CSU lead to 2-1 on two walks, a wild pitch and an infield hit by junior third baseman Chris Ard. After allowing back-to-back walks, Buc pitcher Ian Holmen struck out shortstop Matt Matulia. With two outs and runners on the corners thanks to a wild pitch, Ard singled off the pitcher driving home Brown from third for the Bulldogs first run of the game. Holmen fanned junior right fielder Josh Stackley with runners on the corners to end the rally and the inning.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 2-2 with a RBI-single up the middle off the bat of pinch hitter Mark Egleton. Senior Andy Phillips raced home from second to knot the game at two runs apiece on Egleton's base knock.
The Bucs got three runs on five walks and a Bulldog error to take 5-2 lead into the ninth. Bulldog shortstop Tripp Cappelmann committed a fielding error that allowed two runs to score, while The Citadel bullpen did not allow a hit but surrendered two unearned runs to give CSU a three run lead
Bobby Parnell (1-4) earned the win for Charleston Southern to pick up his first win of the season. He pitched the final two innings to get the victory. Citadel reliever Matt Covington (0-1) took the loss as was charged with the go ahead run after walking the lead off batter in the bottom of the eighth.
The Bulldogs will return home for a three-game nonconference series against High Point beginning on Friday at 7 pm in Riley Park.
