Jon Aughey had two hits and scored two runs, while Jonathan Ellis pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his sixth win of the year to lead The Citadel past High Point 10-4 Friday in nonconference baseball action in Riley Park.
The Citadel (21-13) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on four hits and a throwing error. Senior Chip Cannon got the rally started with a double to right and then scored on an error by High Point third baseman Matt Richardson on an infield hit by junior Jon Aughey. The Bulldogs scored their second run thanks to a run scoring double from sophomore DH Mark Egleton that plated Aughey, while the Dogs capped off the inning with a RBI-single to right-center field.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs added three runs to push their lead to 6-0. Sophomore Trent Weathers started the rally with a lead off base hit and raced home on Aughey's ground rule double after moving to second on a base on balls issued to senior Chip Cannon. Cannon and Aughey were driven-in by senior Andy Phillips on a two-run single up the middle.
The Citadel extended their lead to 9-0 with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Dogs scored in the sixth on a RBI-single to center by junior third baseman Chris Ard, while they plated two on a fielder's choice off the bat of Phillips and a pinch hit run scoring single by Chris Altman.
High Point (6-31) got on the board with two runs in the eighth on a RBI-double to right-center by Matt Keever that plated Matt Richardson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Draska.
The Dogs scored again in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by freshman pinch hitter Chris Eaves and junior Josh Stackley. Eaves drove a ball off the left field wall and strolled home on Stackley's RBI-double to left-center to make the score 10-2 in favor of The Citadel.
In the ninth, the Panthers added two runs to cut the lead 10-4 on a two-run home run by Rey Rojas. Rojas ripped the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his seventh homer of the year.
Citadel starter Jonathan Ellis (6-2) earned the win as he pitched seven scoreless innings. He scattered seven hits, while fanning seven. Sophomore Ryan Owens pitched the eight, while junior Shannon Sprouse pitched the final inning. High Point's Bob Helman (1-5) took the loss as he gave up seven runs on 11 hits.
The Bulldogs and the Panthers will meet again tomorrow at 2 pm for the second game of the three -game series.
