Josh Stackley blasted a solo homer, while Ken Egelton picked up his sixth win to lead The Citadel over Davidson 12-3 in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon in front of 1,277 fans in Riley Park.
Davidson (15-23, 10-13 SoCon) scored one run in the first to jump ahead 1-0 on a RBI-double by Taylor Shoop. With runners on first and second, Shoop doubled in the right center field gap driving home Andrew Musashe, who reached on a HBP to lead off the game.
The Citadel (25-15, 14-3 SoCon) answered in the bottom of the first as they scored eight runs on eight hits to go ahead 8-1. The Bulldogs saw 12 batters go to the plate. Senior first baseman Chip Cannon got the Dogs on the board with a two-run double, while senior outfielder Andy Phillips added a two RBI with a single up the middle.
Junior right fielder Josh Stackley ripped his fifth home run of the year over the left field wall in the Bulldogs' half of the fourth to extend The Citadel's lead to 9-1.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the fifth to blow the game open 12-1. Sophomore designated hitter, junior third baseman Chris Ard and Cannon all tallied RBI-singles in the fifth.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI-singles from catcher Alex Entrekin and first baseman Alden Crissey to make the score 12-3. Right fielder Sam Navarro tried to score from second on Crissey's single, but Stackley gunned him down at the plate to preserve the Bulldogs' nine run lead.
Citadel starter Ken Egleton (6-2) picked up the win on seven innings of work. He allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits, while fanning five and walking three. Bulldog reliever Ryan Owens got Jay Heafner to bounce into a bases loaded double play to end the game.
Davdison's Matt Dellinger (1-5) took the loss as he surrendered nine runs, all earned, on 12 hits in three and a third innings.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats will square off in the series finale tomorrow at 1:00 pm in Riley Park.
