Bullodgs' Ellis Honored as SoCon Pitcher of the Week

April 26, 2004

Spartanburg, SC - The Southern Conference today named The Citadel's Jonathan Ellis as the Pitcher of the Week and Case Cassedy of Furman as its baseball Player of the Week.

Ellis, a 6-0, 192-pound junior right-hander from Charleston, SC (St. Andrews) tossed a complete game three-hitter in posting a 3-0 win over Davidson on April 23. Ellis, who leads the SoCon with four complete games and two shutouts, also lowered his league-leading earned run average to 1.44. All three hits that Ellis allowed were infield singles as he faced 30 batters, just three over the minimum.

The complete game shutout against the Wildcats was Ellis' second shutout of the season and his fourth complete game of the year.

Cassedy, a 6-2, 185-pound sophomore first baseman/designated hitter from Tallahassee, FL (Maclay HS), hit .550 in four games last week for Furman, helping the Paladins to wins in all four games. Cassedy was one for four in a 4-1 win over Charlotte on April 21, then went 10 for 16 in a three-game series sweep at Appalachian State over the weekend. He had four doubles, four RBI and a home run against ASU and also scored eight runs.

Ellis is the third member of The Citadel baseball team to receive the Southern Conference's weekly honor. Senior first baseman Chip Cannon earned Player of the Week laurels on March 15 as he batted .588 with three home runs and eight runs batted in, while junior outfielder Josh Stackley was recognized as the league's best player on March 24. Stackley took home the award after swatting two three-run homers and recording a .438 batting average for the week.
