Bulldogs' Dawson Signs Free Agent Contract With Browns

April 26, 2004

Charleston, SC - Senior offensive tackle Lew Dawson a first team All-Southern Conference selection in 2003 signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns for the 2004 season.

"It has been an exciting couple of days and I am excited about signing with the Browns," Dawson stated. "I believe that I have good shot with the Browns and hope everything works out for the best."

Dawson a 6-5, 320-pound offensive tackle anchored an offensive line that allowed only 13 sacks last season. During his senior season he compiled 36 knock down blocks as well as scoring a two-point conversion against Appalachian State.

"This is a great accomplishment for Lew," Citadel head coach John Zernhelt stated. "He was our most valuable player on our line of scrimmage last season and it is great to see all of his hard work earn him a chance in the NFL."

Dawson's signing with the Browns marks the second consecutive season that a Bulldog has earned a free agent contract. Dawson joins former Citadel defensive end Cliff Washburn who signed via free agency with the Chicago Bears as one of only two Bulldogs on current NFL rosters. Dawson will leave on Thursday for Cleveland Browns mini-camp.
